Argentina: Mountains - Villa de Merlo

ocated in the northeast of San Luis Province and being a natural border on Córdoba Province, Villa de Merlo is a city that lies quietly at the foot of Comechingones mountains, between EL Tren and Divisadero Hills.
To get to this mountaineous landscape of exceptional beauty , one can choose to do it by plane to San Luis City and from there onwards through Nº 20 Provincial Route till Nº 148 National Route running 208 km in all.
In Merlo, the tourist comes across a touristic center with a microclimate that invites one to visit the region in any Season of the year. There are atoms in the air with a negative ionization that make one feel in a good mood, strong and without weariness.
The climate is dry with an average annual temperature of 20ºC. In Summer, the temperatures range from 18º to 33º C while in Winter days are warm and one can see the mountains with snow with temperatures ranging from 4º C to 17º C.
The city is settled at 890 meters above sea level with old constructions from the beginning of the XVIII century such as Nuestra Señora del Rosario Chapel , that has a roof made of beams of axe blown carobs and adobe walls, or the Main Square that has a design from the same time with a remarkable wood.
Some other buildings that are historically valuable in the heart of the village are the Town Hall, The Post Office, the police station and the House of the Poet - all of them rising testimony of the colonial times.
The most important places of Merlo village are "Pasos Malos" from where one can enjoy sunsets beyond comparison , the "Mirador de la Amistad" (Friendship viewpoint) which is the departing site for walks to Rincón del Este neighbourhood or to "Piedra Blanca", a typically mountaineous place with colourful buildings and beautiful gardens.
In the surroundings of Merlo city, one can visit places like Papagayos, Santa Rosa de Conlara, La Angostura and Concarán that are, among others, towns or natural reservations with beautiful landscapes and archaeological - paleontologic sites that are very valuable in the region.
Fans of adventure tourism find in Merlo the unlosable chances of practising paragliding, hang-gliding, climbing, hicking, mountain bike riding,going on fourtrax excursions and in motorbikes since the topography is ideal for these thrilling activities.  |
