The city of Río Hondo whose original name was Miraflores, conforms a tourism center whose importance is in the Thermal bath next to the Dulce river. On this same River one is the Frontal Dock that an artificial lake apt for the nautical one dams and the sport fishing.
The Dock was inaugurated in 1967 with the purpose of attenuating its swellings, improving the irrigation and to generate energy. The waters of the Dulce River, already were known from pre-Columbian time with the name of the Aguas del Sol, and the prestige of the city, is recognized several centuries ago, when the princes of the Alto Perú - the Incas arrived at "miraculous waters" to enjoy a unique microclimate and to give termomineral energy to their lives. Before the arrival of the Spaniards, they inhabited the zone native sedentary, "tonocotes", which they were located to borders of the Soconcho, river of tame waters, that quechua called Misky Mayu and the Spanish translated like Dulce river. They were indeed princes Incas, who organized caravans from Cuzco, crossing the plateau until the borders of the "Misky Mayu" to appreciate the virtues that had the "Yacu Rupáj" (hot waters) considered by them of divine origin. The Incas said that their springs brought the Earth fire and gave miraculously the health to the sufriente or the patient. Its fame extended with the stories, until the empire of the Son of the Sun, in the heights of the Tahuantisuyo.
The Slugs of Vinará and Miraflores approached illustrious travellers to him at the time of Conquista: San Francisco Solano, the Congresales de Tucumán, the Ejército del Norte, Facundo Quiroga and the Taboada.
In the beginning of century XX, Spas were a hamlet of 300 inhabitants and began to arise the first hotels for the tourism that found some precursors by the end of the XIX, since the first lodging was constructed in 1884.
It was relocated to 21 km of its primitive site in 1966, to construct the Frontal Dock. Its first location, is place setting by waters of the lake.
City the 6 of September of 1954 Is declared, but the Municipality obtained his autonomy, just in 1958 and chose like first Municipal Intendant to Mr. Luis Jorge Manzur.
Today it is the greater tourist center of province and one of most important of the region.
As history miraculous tells that: "San Francisco Solano passed by the old villa, course to the Tucumán to provide themselves with walnut wood and to construct the temple that today rises in the Capital City of Santiago del Estero. When returning, Río Hondo was in the neighborhoods of Villa with the great grown river (Dulce River).
It was humanly impossible to overcome it, but santo, tells, that untying its cord it threw to the river, opening waters and expressing the following thing: "Río Hondo, you will not prevent our step".
It was first in touching the other border and left to its tracks and the one of its mule, in a stone, that still Villa conserves itself and venerates in the new Chapel Río Hondo. From that miraculous fact, Santo de la Cruz and the Violin, are venerated in the region and the original name of Miraflores, was transformed into Río Hondo.
