The human group characteristic of the zone was the one of the omaguacas. Name with which the Spaniards knew the natives who inhabited the Quebrada del Río Grande de Jujuy, that also was well-known from those distant times like Quebrada de Humahuaca.
Its name derives from a native legend that it at the top makes reference that cries: Humahuacac! Humahuacac.
