ualeguay, and the river that vió to be born.
The city takes its name from the river that vió to be born. The Gualeguaychú word is a deformation of the guaraní term Yaguarí Guazú: Yaguar: Tiger; I: River; Guazú: Great, that is "River of the Great Tiger". According to students of the toponymy there are other definitions like "Water to walk slow" or "River of the caves of the pigs. The natives who populated entrerrianas earth belonged to diverse groups of the coast. Mepenes and mocoretás lived in the northwest; in the south they lived tímbúes, chanás and mebguás, settlers also of the Delta; charrúas moved by the zones next to the Uruguay river. All were friends of the water and excellent connoisseurs of rivers and streams, traveled on canoes constructed by they themselves and handled with skill the arc and the arrow.
The colonizadoras currents towards Entre Ríos start off mainly, of three points: from the west, of Santa Fe; from the north, of the jesuíticas Missions and from the south, of Buenos Aires.
On 1783 Tomás de Rocamora by order of the Town hall of Buenos Aires it founds three towns: Concepción del Uruguay, Gualeguay and Gualeguaychú. These foundations had direct relation with the necessity to militarily control the region against the Portuguese and the smugglers.
Rocamora arrives at the initial town, very small and received by the neighbors, it observes that the place where was the first establishment was low and subject to flooding, deciding the transfer but to the north, in front of the island today called Freedom.
The 18 of October of 1783 the First Town hall formed with which it was officially founded later to be elevated to the category of city the 4 of November of 1851, by decree of then governor Gral. Justo José de Urquiza.
According to the Laws of Indians, Rocamora clears the land, makes the mensuras, it assigns to the places public, it distributes 85 lots, it chooses the members of the First Town hall and Santo Patrono, happening to be called Villa, San Jose de Gualeguaychú. The first town hall designated by Rocamora, was integrated by the Alcalde Vicente Navarro and the regidores Domingo Ruíz, Valentin Barrio and Pedro José Duarte, Captain of military services were designated to Gregorio Santa Cruz. Between some of the first neighbors they stood out Don José Sanchez Calderón, Juan Castares, Pedro Pablo Ezeysa, José Aryan Montiel, Antonio Azorín and José Miner.
In 1836 temple is San Antonio in front of finished to the Church the present Seat wonderful Constitution whose construction began enough time before, by year 1807. The first population center was made up of humble and working farmers; but quickly one went increasing by the arrival of Creoles and gringos, young people, intelligent ready to the work and with anxieties of progress.
In year 1890 the Gualeguaychú branch of the FF.CC. Central Entrerriano was inaugurated, his Station and the Street car, arriving both until the Port that counted already on stone wharf. The advance was remarkable with the installation of the refrigerator to borders of the River in 1929; initiative that was taken by the Cattle Cooperative, counting on own port and guaranteeing the creation of a new district: New town and the development of new iron routes.
In second half of century XIX, the commerce improves and increases, being located in the central area and around streets 25 de Mayo and Urquiza.
The progressive growth of the city vió protected by the commerce that were exerted through the port, and the growth of the small and medium industry, the installation of numerous educative centers, favoring the education of children and adults.
To 33 km of the city is the great Bridge the International "General José de San Martín", who ties Port Unzue with Fray Bentos in the Republic of Uruguay.
