Argentina: Buenos Aires - Tandil
Tandil

andil, the stone that barks.
The origin of the name must to an indigenous cacique who lived in the zone. Nevertheless also one tells that there was a river that had that name before the cacique. Others make a study of the words mapuches or araucanos, where Lil, that could be a deformation of Deal, is equivalent to "rock" or "rocky crag". As far as So drift of Thau is said that, that means nothing less than "to bark". According to these Tandil analysts it would mean "stone that barks" in obvious reference to the moving stone.
In the scope of the province of Buenos Aires, and more specifically in the serranos systems of Ventania and Tandilia, they were located puelches –Guénaken -, ethnic group that belonged to the Tehuelches natives, whom in araucana voice “gente of sur” means;.
Puelches was recolectores and hunters. Later, with the arrival of the Spaniards, puelches added the towns of Pampas, that knocked down to the white towns until half-full of century XIX.
Doenohayal and Yahati were the name of two caciques who chose by seat the outposts called elevations: of Tandil or Caysu, and the Volcano, where this mountain finishes.
One third parcialidad lives more to the north in "Carayhel" which means: Puelches adherent to the Spaniards. From this parcialidad it leaves was made up the reduction founded by the jesuitas. More of them they were of high stature and well formed robust body and. They lived in awnings of horse leather; very they were not become fond of to agriculture, and they preferred to live on the hunting.
It was a valiant group in the war. Their arms were very acute, ensartadas very long cane lances. Few also did not have swords, introduced by the commerce with the Spaniards, very useful for them, but pernicious for the Christians.
The own arms of this people were saetas small and short, of wood it lasts and poisonous. In addition they used of the balls, composed by two small stone bullets heavy, meetings with a cord of bull of about ten feet of length, and in the extremities strongly twisted: they used them with extreme ability having one of the bullets in the hand and vibrating the hung other towards the enemy; releasing first, the two surround the victim of such luck, that tied the hands and arms by the two balls they made the resistance impossible. In the hunting it is that weapon the one that thrown towards the persecuted animal surrounded the legs to him.
In addition they used to protect itself, a species of guanaco leather shield, triple and well working, and so hard that only one bullet of tube could penetrate it.
Towards 1770, the Virrey Juan Jose de Vértiz sent an expedition to the south that arrived at Tandil and two years later it crosses the orographic cord of Tandil and a dry stone corral is described meticulously in the environs of the Chapaleofú stream, exact test of the ethnic establishments.
Produced the Revolution of May in 1810, Colonel Pedro Andrés Garci´a presented/displayed in 1816, a plan of defense and colonization, insisting on the project in 1821. Finalizing that year, the Governor of the General Province Martín Rodriguez, he made a campaign against the Indian, arriving until Chapaleofú.
The following year comisionó to colonel Garci´a to carry out an expedition until the Mountain ranges of the Window, in order to talk with the Indians, to propose to them treated about peace and to appreciate its forces and resources. Garci´a advised the foundation of two forts: one in the mountain range of the Volcano and another one in slopes of the mountain range of the Tandil, that they would lay the way to the communications with Carmen de Patagones.
This report, doubtlessly, influenced in the decision of the Government to carry out the foundation of a fort in the Tandil.
The 4 of April of 1823 the own governor Brigadier Martín Rodriguez, founds the Fort of Independence (today Tandil). In 1850 the First Ocal Commission was constituted in Tandil to attend the peace judge.
The incursions of the Indians by the fields of the Tandil and the Lobería became more frequent towards 1855.
In 1865 the Fort was demolished, and the following year the construction of the Municipal House, that had to lodge, to the police station and the jail seted out.
In 1873 municipal elections were made that were gained closely by the foreign candidates, between whom were the Spanish Ramon Santamarina and the Danish Fugl and Manuel Eygler. The sporadic incursions of natives continued, to disappear just with the military campaign of the Gral. Rock.
In 1883 the arrival of the Railroad to Tandil takes place. From its arrival, the economic expansion was almost explosive.
In the decade of ` 10 the first public constructions are made and prevailed and the New Municipal Palace is constructed, delineating also the Central Seat.
